Newsletter:Put the mask on first! 09
My friend Amy was visiting and she said something that really caught my attention. She was talking about how she was learning to put the mask on first for oxygen before taking care of anyone else. I so loved this metaphor.
When you're flying you are always told that in case of emergency you need to put your mask on first before helping others. I'm sure this sounds and feels counter intuitive, especially since we've been taught to give give give. But think about it for a second, if you haven't taken care of your oxygen needs, how in the world can you save others?
Especially at this time of the year where we're stretched to the maximum with our time, patience, energy and money. Make sure you put the oxygen mask on before you try to take care of anyone else. By the way, I'm not in anyway saying that you shouldn't help anyone! I personally am in service more now than the rest of the year. I'm talking about making sure your life and your family's life is doing ok first.
Remember, the best gift in the world is sharing your joy, love, compassion and care. If you're doing it while you're stressed and exhausted, there is no gift in that.
Be well, be happy
